The Carl B. Heilman, M.D., Skull Base Research and Surgical Training Lab is a new, dedicated environment for hands-on education and research in skull base surgery. Supported by philanthropy and established through the generosity of Kimberly and Robert Jedlicka, the lab provides medical students, residents, and fellows with a hands-on setting in which to develop and refine advanced surgical techniques before performing them on patients, helping to reduce risk in surgical training.
Through cadaver-based dissection and surgical simulation, trainees gain a three-dimensional understanding of the intricate anatomy of the skull base that is essential for surgical planning and execution. The lab enables learners to practice specific approaches, including translabyrinthine, far lateral, endoscopic endonasal, and retrosigmoid techniques, and to strengthen microsurgical skills through repeated practice in a controlled, low-risk environment.
In addition to surgical training, the lab supports translational research and imaging related to skull base surgery, enabling the study of surgical techniques and outcomes while remaining responsive to evolving needs and priorities in the field.
Named in honor of Dr. Carl Heilman, Neurosurgeon-in-Chief at Tufts Medical Center, the lab recognizes a career defined by exceptional surgical care, teaching, and mentorship. Dr. Heilman has trained generations of neurosurgeons while improving the lives of patients facing complex neurological conditions. The lab reflects his enduring commitment to anatomical mastery, thoughtful preparation, and rigorous training as the foundation of excellent patient care.
By providing a platform for sustained learning, repeated practice, and refinement of highly specialized procedures, the Carl B. Heilman, M.D., Skull Base Research and Surgical Training Lab prepares the next generation of neurosurgeons, ENT surgeons, and skull base specialists, strengthening surgical precision and confidence and ultimately improving patient outcomes.
Your gift to the Carl B. Heilman, M.D., Skull Base Research and Surgical Training Lab will advance this work, supporting continued outfitting, training, and research activities that advance surgical education, innovation, and patient care at Tufts.
